At Ryde Public School, we are deeply committed to ensuring every child—and their family—experiences a confident, supported and joyful transition from preschool to primary school. Our transition program is built on strong community partnerships, early connections, and thoughtful preparation designed to meet the needs of our learners.
Strong Partnerships with Local Preschools and Daycares
We collaborate closely with preschools and long day-care centres across the local area. This includes:
- Preschool visits where our staff spend time getting to know children and educators
- School readiness talks for families and educators
- Preschool excursions to our school, helping children become familiar with the environment
Each year, we also host a Directors’ Morning Tea—a dedicated opportunity for early learning directors and educators to connect with our leadership team, share insights, and discuss how we can best support the transition process. Conversations from these events led to the creation of a suite of tailored transition videos addressing the most common questions families ask in early learning settings.
Targeted Support for Students with Additional Needs
Our expert transition teachers visit local early learning centres to observe and support children with additional needs, ensuring we understand how to best set them up for success. We work in close partnership with our school psychologist, who supports both best practice and parental wellbeing—recognising that transition is an important journey not only for children, but also for their families.
Community Connectedness
Our strong community relationships mean local early childhood education centres are regularly involved in school events, strengthening children’s sense of belonging well before they start Kindergarten.
Orientation and School Visits
We offer school tours in Term 3 and Term 4, followed by two Orientation Days in the year before your child starts school. These sessions allow teachers to observe your child in a relaxed, play-based setting so they can understand their needs and plan for a smooth and successful start to school.
For children with siblings already enrolled, we also host a special Siblings’ Picnic to foster connection, pride, and confidence.
Our New Preschool Transition Room – now open!
We have recently opened our newly designed Preschool Transition Room—a dedicated space that supports early learners as they take their first steps into primary school life. Purpose-built with play-based learning, creativity, comfort, and belonging in mind, this room will be used for:
- Preschool and daycare excursions
- Orientation sessions
- Playgroups
- Targeted transition programs
…and much more.
This inviting space will help our littlest learners feel at home from the moment they walk through the door.
